Everything you need to know about windscreen wiper maintenance

We’ve touched on the subject of windscreen wipers numerous times in our previous guides however, today we are going to take an in-depth look into the dull yet necessary world of wipers.

The truth is, even though windscreen wipers play a crucial role in every modern vehicle, many car owners simply don’t have a clue when it comes to their maintenance. We’re so used them being there that we simply don’t pay much attention to them. This isn’t ideal as windscreen wipers have the serious task of keeping you safe on the road. Our short guide will cover everything from how to get the most from your wipers to how to change them.

If you’re reading this article, you are probably curious about windscreen wipers. Whether you’re a car owner or an enthusiast, it doesn’t matter. Knowing more about the different parts of a vehicle can always come in-handy in the future.

Windscreen wipers have been around since the early days of the automotive industry. Today, you won’t find a vehicle on the road without them. They clear obstacles off your windscreen allowing you to see the road in front of you clearly, especially in extreme weather conditions.

Due to the fact that they are used a lot, they tend to wear down rather quickly. It is recommended that you closely inspect your wipers at least once a month, checking for any faults. If you deem them unsafe, simply replace them, don’t risk it.

Although windscreen wipers should ideally be replaced every six months, it all depends on how much they’re used. If you live in an area where rain or snow are a problem, they will more than likely need to be replaced more regularly. If on the other hand you live somewhere hot, where extreme weather is not an issue, you can probably get more use out of them.

The only way to make sure that they are safe is by inspecting them on a regular basis, as mentioned above.

If you don’t feel comfortable inspecting them yourself, take your car to a professional who will be able to give you advice and show you exactly what to look out for.

One of the things you need to be on the lookout for are any visible faults. If your wipers, for example, are no longer in contact with the windscreen, it’s probably time to replace them. Also, if they’re constantly pausing and not doing their job, give them a closer look. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

When cleaning your vehicle, always make sure to be extra careful around the wipers. They’re quite fragile so want to be extra gentle.
